I'm Peter Schmidt, founder of Prepare. I personally teach most of our SAT and ACT prep classes. I’m a proud graduate of Saucon Valley High School, Columbia University (BA in English), Yale University (MM in Music), and the University of Houston (MFA in Drama). Before launching Prepare, I performed professionally in musicals, plays and operas all over the country.
As it turns out, one of my ‘side-hustles’ — teaching SAT prep for a private firm in California — began a new career for me. I realized that my academic background, intellectual curiosity, and performing experience combined to help me connect with students and help them learn.

According to College Board data, students who complete 20 hours of focused SAT prep experience an average improvement of 115 points, while even 6–8 hours of preparation is associated with gains of approximately 90 points. Independent studies further show that students who participate in professional SAT prep courses or private tutoring consistently outperform those who rely on self-study alone. A large Princeton Review study of more than 10,000 students found that those who prepared through tutoring or group classes scored an average of 100 points higher than unprepared students. Additional research from Oxford University comparing coached students to uncoached control groups demonstrated average gains of 23.5 points in verbal and 32.7 points in math. Together, these findings highlight the substantial impact that expert SAT preparation has across all score ranges. The amount a student can improve depends heavily on their starting score. Students beginning below 1000 often experience the largest gains—typically 150–250 points—because preparation addresses foundational content gaps and core test-taking skills. Students scoring in the 1000–1200 range usually improve 100–150 points through targeted strategy refinement and focused practice. Even high-achieving students above 1200 can gain 50–100+ points by improving accuracy, pacing, and mastery of advanced question types needed for elite scores of 1400–1600.
